about the artist

I was born in Melbourne Australia, married a Canadian and have lived on both continents as well as in New Zealand for 14 years. It was while I was in New Zealand that I began to fulfill my long dreamed of desire to paint. It began with evening classes run by Pam Watson in Hamilton New Zealand. Pam both encouraged and quietly guided me to develop my own style and also importantly to be confident enough to exhibit my work.
I have followed my mother's footsteps in being a late bloomer!  She became an exhibiting artist and my father painted, sculptured and tried his hand at many creative pastimes in his later years. I remember the strong smell of turps and my mothers constant wish that "she had more time to paint"! My parents love of the Australian bush and nature, as well as art, instilled in me a yearning to express what I saw and felt around me. i have a particular love for the wide open spaces of the coast and the sea, which has been with me since I was a young girl going to the beach in Australia. Since coming back to Canada I am enjoying discovering the beautiful Canadian landscapes through the eyes of an artist and am loving it!
My style has been likened to "Group of Seven" which when I first exhibited in Canada meant nothing as I was unfamiliar with their work.  Now however I realise that my desire to " uncomplicate" when I respond  to what I see has produced those kind of paintings. This is the style that I am developing more and more, though it has taken some time and will take much more as art is not something that is finite, but grows as we grow. I continue to  learn constantly, more by doing than anything else. When time allows I do courses at the Ottawa School of Art and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre.
Emily Carr and her writings have been a source of inspiration to me, as well as  my job at Oakpark Retirement Community, where working with the elderly and helping them find their creative side has in turn inspired me to keep finding mine!
